Stewardship- Teens on Edge™

Skiing and snowboarding are amazing, exhilarating sports. However, for many individuals these activities are not always accessible due to a lack of affordability.  It was for this reason, that we have chosen, “Teens on Edge™” as our primary stewardship program.  Teens on Edge™ is a non-for-profit organization, that was founded out of the creative inspiration of Denis Masson and his son Matthew.  Their passion for alpine sport lead Denis and his son to create a program that made skiing accessible to local teens who desired to become proficient skiers.

Their program not only exposes teens to skiing, it has also made it possible for those teens to become lifelong skiers.  Annually, this program provides 4 teens their equipment and a season’s pass from a local ski resort.  Though they enroll only four new teens in their program each year, they are invited to return each subsequent year. The limited enrollment translates to low instructor-to-teen ratios, which in turn leads to rapid skills development and strong life-coaching skills and support. The program instructors are chosen for both their skill set and values.

A big part of the program is stewardship.  There is an expectation from the teens to volunteer at their local ski school, not only as a way to give back, but also to expose them to the mentoring aspect of skiing. Many of the teens that they have enrolled over the last few years, since their inception, have been successful at achieving their instructor certification after just two seasons of skiing. At this point in their development, there is a much higher likelihood of lifelong engagement in the sport.

Teens on Edge™ will also fund the participant’s enrollment in the instructor certification course in exchange for those individuals becoming instructors within the Teens on Edge™ program. They work at their local ski resort and also volunteer once a week teaching the newly enrolled teens.

Giving back is an essential part of life, and the core values of this program strongly emphasizes this concept.  Once a participant  becomes an instructor  they will continue to work on their growth as both a teacher and a skier.  They will frequently be paired as a new instructor with a more senior one to help their growth as educators.
In summary, Teens on Edge™ is a non for profit organization with core goals and values aimed at our future leaders.  Infusing our young citizens with encouragement, hope, values and passion to create change within themselves, will translate into positive change around them.
